Big Noise Community Samba Band

Big Noise Community Samba Band is made up of about 40 musicians, ranging in age from the young (members must be aged at least 14) to the young at heart! Some of us have previous musical experience, some don't, but we all share a love for the samba-reggae sounds that we make together.

Big Noise began in September 2007 when two samba players had a vision to form a Community Samba Band in Gosport. We began with the help of Gosport Carnival Factory and within one year we formed a committee, became self funded and have survived ever since!

Event 4

The Renaissance Choir

The Renaissance Choir has a well-earned high reputation for the performance of music from the Renaissance as well as for works from later centuries.

We have been singing for more than 40 years and have strong links with local performers and our enthusiastic audience.

We work hard to maintain high standards and quality of performance. We are a friendly choir of about 30-35 voices, and have performed music in both double and triple choir form: we’ve performed both Tallis’s Spem in Alium and Striggio’s 40 part Mass. Particular specialisms include the works of William Byrd, Thomas Tallis and Tómas Luis da Victoria, as well as later composers such as Poulenc, Whitacre and Lauridsen.

We usually give four or five concerts a year in the Portsmouth area. In 2019 we are going on tour to Utrecht, the Netherlands

We meet weekly Monday nights 8-10 pm during term time at Central Hall, St. Mary Street, SO14 1NF where we work hard at singing, making friends and having coffee together!

Meridian Winds

Meridian Winds was formed in 1996 by two instrumental teachers, Tim Norris and Tim Warren, and is made up of professional musicians, teachers and students. The object of the ensemble is to rehearse and perform wind band music of all styles to the highest possible standards.

The ensemble meets on a regular basis to rehearse at The Gregg School in Southampton and has a varied repertoire. This ranges from the best of contemporary music through transcriptions of film and TV scores to the more conventional military band fare of marches, waltzes and overtures.

As well as our concert work, we are always delighted to play for the local community based festivals and we welcome enquiries from organizers. We also work closely with local schools and colleges, encouraging young musicians to enjoy their music making and broadening their knowledge of this very accessible medium through workshops and concerts.
